The naming conventions alone create friction. These model names provide no insight into their capabilities or suitable use cases. It's like being asked at a restaurant to choose between the “Chef's Special #3” and the “House Favorite” without knowing what either dish contains.
This isn't just poor UX design. It's a well-documented psychological barrier.
Barry Schwartz's research in "The Paradox of Choice" demonstrates that too many options don't empower users. They paralyze them. When people face choices without clear differentiation, they make suboptimal decisions or abandon the task entirely.
Schwartz popularized this concept in his book with the Jam Experiment (conducted by psychologists Sheena Iyengar and Mark Lepper), which proves the point. Participants offered six types of jam were 10 times more likely to purchase than those who saw 24 options.
The AI model explosion creates identical decision fatigue.

This confusion leads to poor results. Users select the wrong model, receive disappointing outputs, and conclude that AI isn't ready for their needs. They're using a bicycle for highway travel and wondering why they can't keep up with traffic.

Practical Applications for Better AI Results
Here's how to leverage this insight:
1. Stop worrying about model names. Let the AI choose (once these features launch). Focus on clearly stating your question or task instead of trying to decode which model might work best. Context is king.
2. Understand your task complexity
Simple factual questions = System 1
Analysis and strategy = System 2
Creative work = Often System 2
Basic summaries = System 1
3. Optimize your prompts differently
For writing tasks, I've found that disabling web search improves results. The AI focuses on your input rather than getting distracted by internet rabbit holes.
For data analysis, I switch to ChatGPT because it handles numerical reasoning better.
Use tools like SuperWhisper or Monologue to “speak” your prompts into existence. When you speak out loud, it’s incredible how much more context you are giving the models.
4. Watch for the upgrade opportunity
Here's what AI companies should do next: Show users the difference. When someone asks a complex question on a free tier, generate two responses:
